Jean-Baptiste SÉCHERET
Né en 1957 / Born in 1957
Jean-Baptiste Sécheret studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1976) and was a resident at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid (1984–1986). He taught at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Belleville, and now lives and works in Paris. He also devotes a large part of his time to printmaking.
Light lies at the heart of his work as a painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He studies all its variations on a given site, often working in series. Through the repetition of a motif, but also through the distance from which he positions the painted subject—whether everyday objects (funnels) or universal themes (trees)—his approach is contemplative and his work unfolds in slowness. The human figure is always absent from his landscapes, excluding any narrative intent, which he considers anecdotal.
