A celebrated painter of the Parisian nightlife of the fin de siècle and the seedy underbelly of Montmartre, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was also one of the greatest lithographers of his time. The some three hundred and seventy prints he produced during the last ten years of his life, including around fifty in colour (sometimes posters), deal with the same subjects that the prevailing naturalism and decadentism had inspired in the artist (who worked on several occasions as an illustrator). However, Toulouse-Lautrec’s lithographs, even more so than his paintings, emphasise the graphic nature of his work and take to their extreme the simplification of line and colour that Japanese prints had inspired him to adopt.
