Jan Harmensz MÜLLER
Amsterdam 1571 – 1628
Born in Amsterdam into a family of engravers, publishers, and booksellers and print dealers, Jan Harmensz. Muller was introduced at an early age to the techniques of printmaking and publishing by his father, the engraver and printer Harmen Jansz. Muller. Trained in the family workshop, Jan Harmensz. Muller subsequently refined his art through contact with the Dutch Mannerist school, particularly under the influence of the renowned engraver Hendrick Goltzius, with whom he may have studied before returning to settle permanently in his native city in 1590.
Muller was not an exceptionally prolific engraver: a little over ninety works by his hand are known today. Although he produced around twenty prints based on his own compositions, his activity was primarily devoted to reproductive printmaking.
