Gustave DORÉ

Born in Strasbourg in 1832, Doré revealed himself to be a prodigiously gifted draftsman from an early age. Settling in Paris during his adolescence, he quickly achieved success through his caricatures and book illustrations, which made him famous throughout Europe and England, where his works were widely exhibited at the Doré Gallery in London. However, despite this international recognition, the artist was frustrated by the limited attention given to his paintings and drawings. From the 1870s onward, particularly following a stay in Scotland in 1873, he increasingly adopted pure watercolor, a technique whose spontaneity suited the speed of his imagination and his practice of drawing directly from nature during his travels. Landscapes then became one of his major sources of inspiration, expressing his profound attachment to nature and to the grandeur of mountainous landscapes.
