A prominent member of the Barbizon School and a friend of Corot, Charles-François Daubigny was not only a respected and sought-after painter but also a talented engraver. Although he devoted himself in his youth to illustration, for which he produced numerous drawings, he later began to publish his etchings independently (127 in total, sometimes on an aquatint background and often retouched with a drypoint needle) as well as his glass prints (18 pieces in this modern technique, which he explored alongside Corot). Like his paintings, his engravings mainly depict charming woodlands and tranquil bodies of water that allow light (through the paper’s reserves) to spread and shimmer. Daubigny also produced numerous drawings, primarily studies from life.
