Born in 1592 in Nancy, the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, Jacques Callot trained in drawing and engraving in Rome and Florence, notably under Remigio Cantagallina and Giulio Parigi. Initially active at the Medici court, the artist later settled in his native city, where he enjoyed the favor of the Duke of Lorraine and the King of France. Callot produced more than 1,400 plates, encompassing a wide variety of genres, tones, and techniques. Working in both engraving and etching, and being the first to use hard-ground varnish and successive acid bites, he produced everything from tiny caricatures to monumental topographical plates, while also creating religious and historical prints, as well as emblematic and allegorical engravings. Although The Caprices, The Fair at Impruneta, The Temptation of Saint Anthony, The Miseries of War, and The Sieges have never been forgotten, Callot was also one of the most accomplished and witty draftsmen of his century.
