Jean-Alexis ACHARD

Trained as a painter in Grenoble, Jean Achard arrived in Paris in the 1830s. After a stay in Egypt, he painted views of the country including « Vue prise aux environs du Caire » which he presented at the Salon. As a landscape painter, he went to Barbizon, became friends with Corot and Daubigny, and became Harpignies’ teacher. Very attached to the Dauphiné, he encouraged the young generation of landscape painters, and was considered the father of the Dauphiné School. He was also an engraver, faithful to etching. His corpus contains only forty-eight plates, produced between 1850 and 1870.
