Ambroise Vollard fut marchand d’art, galeriste et éditeur. Il soutint un grand nombre d’artistes d’avant-garde entre la fin du XIXe et le début du XXe siècle tel que Gauguin, Cézanne, Picasso ou encore Van Gogh. Il constitua tout au long de sa vie une importante collection de quelques milliers d’œuvres.
