Painter, engraver and art theoretician, Roger de Piles was elected « conseiller honoraire amateur » by the Painting and Sculpture french Academy. Within the scope of the esthetic debate on the preeminence of colour or drawing, which stired the 17th century, he advocated in favor of colour, especially in the case of Rubens and Venitian painters.
