Engraver and student of Etienne Fessard and Jean Daullé, Pierre-François Basan devoted himself to publishing and print trade from 1754. While forming his european-wide commercial network, he became one of the most sought-after experts in Paris for the inventories, the organisation of auctions and the publishing of catalogues. In 1767, he published on the first ones, Dictionnaire des graveurs.
