Jacques-François Chéreau was a print publisher and merchant. From the 1770s, and until 1787, the year he sold his stock, he was, with Basan, the most important representative of both these activities in Paris. Carrée’s engraved portrait depicts him with, on the background wall, portraits of the members of his family (see Dictionnaire des Editeurs d’Estampes à Paris sous l’Ancien Régime, Paris, 1987, p. 83).
