Study for an Allegory of Charity

Black chalk
166 × 116 mm
Truncated inscription in the lower left in pen and brown ink Ches Natoire

Reference: S. Caviglia-Brunel, Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-177), Paris, 2012, p. 337, D. 376, p. 338.

This drawing’s peculiar manner, e. g. in the triangle-shaped faces and the barely sketched mouths of the figures, allows Suzana Caviglia to date it around 1745-1746 and to compare it to the similar École du modèle (1746). Probably earlier than two other studies of the same subject, this drawing contains many pentimenti, thus sheding light onto Natoire’s artistic process.
