The Comet
1985
Pen and black ink
228 × 270 mm
Titled, signed and date in the lower right Mohlitz / la comète / 1985
Provenance: Estate of the artist
Spiritual heir to Rodolphe Bresdin, several drawings and prints by whom he owned (Catalogue de la succession de Philippe Mohlitz, Ivoire Bordeaux, September 12th, 2019, n° 414 to 424), Philippe Mohlitz similarly enjoyed creating vast, dramatic landscapes, in this case a lunar-like desert. The open perspective allows the eye to wander towards the comet before circling back to the couple of minuscule figures in the foreground, resting between the Egyption sarcophagi. This piece might be the continuation of a theme familiar to the artist, namely the Flight into Egypt, depicted in several of his prints (e. g. in 1967 and 1984, M. Préaud, Mohlitz, gravures et dessins 1965-2010, 2010, respectively p. 19 and p. 133) and drawings (1963), including a peculiar self-portrait (Perdus en Egypte [Lost in Egypt], 2007). Mohlitz rarely opened up on the signification of his works, therefore they remain enigmatic today.
