Route de Saint-Gilles (Saint-Jean-de-Monts)

Pastel and charcoal on cardboard
356 × 368 mm
Signed with gouache A. Lepère. lower right
On verso, located in ballpoint pen Route de Saint-Gilles

This pastel, located on the verso on the road to Saint-Gilles, is evidence of the artist’s summers of experimentation. As an engraver, painter and draughtsman, Lepère was particularly keen to capture the luminous effects of the Vendée landscapes in all his techniques. Here, the colours are bold and unmixed, superimposed to convey the light of day falling on the foliage of a wood. This pastel could thus be compared with an etching by the artist, Route de Saint-Gilles (Saint-Jean-de-Monts), in which we find not the same composition but the same treatment of the trees, curved and leafy.
