Dedicated to the poet and novelist Saint-Georges de Bouhélier, this early work in his career as a painter is perfectly in keeping with the spirit of his Nabis compatriots and their quest for simplification of form and colour, influenced by the Japanese prints he collected. The sky and trees in the distance, in a monochrome reminiscent of his seascapes and London cityscapes, contrast with the rest of the composition.
