This drawing seems to come from an album (album X), of 50 sheets (here folio 46) evoking very diverse subjects, made in March 1899. This study is very close in subject and technique to another sheet: Etude du pied d’un arbre, undated (private collection; Les univers de Georges Lacombe, exhibition catalogue, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Musée départemental Maurice Denis, Versailles, Musée Lambinet, 2012, p. 189, cat. 146). This is probably the forest of Écouves surrounding the house of the young Lacombe couple in the Orne – property of the Hermitage near Alençon in Saint Nicolas-des-Bois, where the couple settled in October 1897.
