Charles JACQUE
1813 - 1894
Shepherdess and her Flock of Sheep Coming out of the Stable
Charcoal and white chalk on laid beige-coloured paper
393 × 291 mm
Signed in the lower right in charcoal Ch. Jacque
Provenance: Louis-Antoine and Véronique Prat (their stamp in the lower left, Lugt 3617)
This piece was probably used as a preparatory drawing for a painting titled L’arrivée du troupeau [The Arrival of the Flock], 1878-1880, located today in the Norton Simon Museum of Pasadena, California (inv. M.2010.1.198.P). The painting appears to have been executed in Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantique. Charles Jacque also produced an etching in 1890, Bergère, rentrée des moutons [Shepherdess, Return of Sheep] (Paul Prouté n° 374), similar to our composition as well.
