Titled and signed in graphite pencil in the lower right corner Sunday in Locronan // Max Jacob.
A native of Quimper, Max Jacob returns to Brittany regularly. Breton themes are a recurring source of inspiration in his artwork. Dressed in traditional Breton costumes, the residents of Locronan are shown here participating in the Troménie. During this grand 12-kilometer procession around Saint Ronan Church, pilgrims carry large, colorful parish banners as they retrace the steps of the Breton saint. The path is lined with numerous statues of saints erected along the route. A thousand-year-old tradition held every five years between the second and third Sundays in July, a smaller annual Troménie was established in 1889, following a less grueling route.
