This is an illustration for a work by Chateaubriand, as the annotation at the bottom of the montage indicates. But it would seem that the subject relates more to Les Natchez than to Les Aventures du dernier Abencérage. The two stories, written early in the writer’s career, were not published until 1826, in the edition of the complete works.
