This drawings shows typical features of the Troubadour style, be it its small, intimate format or its compositional components – for instance the arch, reminiscent of similar ones painted by Gerrit Dou (1613-1675), a familiar inspiration for Garneray. The young woman depicted here, however, wears a garment of the later Empire style. Her idealized face appears to disprove that this is a portrait. Finally, the landscape in the background might depict Naples.
