This study of a standing man was executed in black chalk, a rare medium in Furini’s work, usually resorting to red chalk (C. Monbeig Goguel in exh. cat. Un’altra bellezza, Francesco Furini, Florence, Palazzo Pitti, December 22nd, 2007 – April 27th, 2008, p. 65.) This piece can hardly be connected to a specific composition, yet it bears testimony to the importance of drawing in Furini’s formation as an artist, in the tradition of the great Florentine studios. The artist carefully outlined his figure and used thin hatchings, some of which he toned down with a stump in order to emphasize the firmness of the musculature. The youthful body depicted here is not free from some ambiguity, as Furini does bring a distinct androgyny into play, typical of the manneristic taste.
