Alexis de Broca had attended the School of Fine Arts. He lived in Nantes – where he had his studio – as well as on the Brittany coast, he travelled in North Africa, Spain and Italy, from where he brought back many paintings. He is also known for his drawings of the 1914-1918 war. He was the grandfather of the filmmaker Philippe de Broca.
