The Banks of the Oise

Red chalk
266 x 436 mm
Provenance: sale after the artist’s death (Lugt 518)

The subject and atmosphere of this drawing is similar to two oils on canvas, one of which, The Oise, Evening Effect, dated 1863 (conserved at the Taft Museum in Cincinati), and the second, Drinking Cows, dated 1867 (California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Mildred Anna Williams Collection of San Francisco), which places it in the 1860s (Madeleine Fidell-Beaufort and Janine Bailly-Herzberg, Daubigny, Paris, Editions Geoffroy-Dechaume, 1975, p. 149, no. 78, and p. 167, no. 105).
