Félix BRACQUEMOND
1833 - 1914
Marshes iris in front of a mountainous landscape, project for a plate
c. 1879
Watercolour over black pencil lines, some pencil lines
Ø 215 mm, sheet: 243 × 315 mm
Provenance: Marie and Félix Bracquemond Collection
The subjects of the plates, dishes and other tableware imagined by Bracquemond were generally prepared by drawing before being transposed onto the enamel. Our watercolour, probably a plate design because of its round format, does not seem to have been chosen for a known service. Nevertheless, the stylised iris in the foreground of the composition can be compared to compositions from the Fleurs et Rubans service of 1879, which would allow us to date the creation of this drawing close to that service.
