Jean BOUCHAUD
Saint-Herblain 1891 – Nantes 1977
La coiffure
Gouache and watercolor, red chalk and black pencil lines
343 × 250 mm
Signed in brushstrokes at the bottom left: J. Bouchaud.
This watercolor is fully in keeping with Jean Bouchaud’s Orientalist and intimist body of work, which he began developing in the early 1920s while living in Algiers. It embodies the key characteristics of his artistic style: a predilection for scenes of daily life, an interest in the female figure captured in a moment of calm, and a balance between ethnographic observation and artistic exploration.
