On the back of the mounting of our drawing, an annotation by its former owner gives us information about the existence of a painting depicting the same subject, done by Bénouville during his stay in Rome: ‘The present drawing is a study for the allegorical painting done in Rome that I own (…)’. This unpublished painting of Justice is probably still in private hands. A preparatory drawing for the same painting, this time set to square, is in the Bremen Kunsthalle. Our sheet, which probably predates the one in Bremen, focuses more on the drapery and layout of the figure than on the details of its face and attributes.
