This is a study for the first project for the east ceiling of the grand foyer of the Paris Opera. Baudry executed the three ceilings (east, west and central) between 1871 and 1874 (cf. C. Vital, Paul Baudry 1828-1886, Les portraits et les nus, La Roche-sur-Yon, Conseil général de Vendée, Paris, Somogy, 2007, p. 170).
