Rococo cartouche supported by an eagle

Pierre-Edmé BABEL

Vers 1700/1711 - 1775

Rococo cartouche supported by an eagle

Pen and brown ink, grey wash, a few lines in black chalk
435 × 276 mm
Signed at the bottom, in the middle, in black chalk: « Babel f »

The subject of the drawing is one of the most astonishing composition of ornement rocaille that reached us from the third quarter of the eighteenth century. Several of these drawings, of small dimensions, were published by Louis Joseph Mondhare in Paris in 1768 in a suite entitled Nouveau Livre d’Ornements.
The presence of the inscription « Babel f », which must be interpreted as a signature, reinforces the opinion that it is Babel who is at the origin of this kind of composition of ornement rocaille.
