Sulpice Guillaume CHEVALIER dit Paul GAVARNI

Paul Gavarni, whose real name was Hippolyte Sulpice Guillaume Chevallier, showed a strong interest in drawing from an early age. He trained first under the architect Dutillard, then at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers, and eventually joined Leblanc’s studio to study mechanical drafting. After a trip to the Pyrenees between 1825 and 1828, he returned to Paris and adopted the pseudonym Gavarni, in reference to the town of Gavarnie.
