After studying medicine in Leyden, Prins, who was a self-taught artist, travelled in Belgium and France, making numerous sketches for later works, paintings, drawings and engravings. In 1784 he returned to The Hague, where from 1785 to 1792 he was director of Pictura, a painters’ guild.
