Alexandre Lunois played a significant role in the revival of lithography in the late 19th century and was one of the leading advocates of colour lithography. Trained in painting and reproductive lithography, he turned his hand to original printmaking following a long journey in the late 1880s that took him first to Belgium and the Netherlands, then to the Maghreb and Spain. Lunois drew on the numerous sketches he produced during his various stays abroad (which he continued until the end of his life) to create prints of Oriental and, above all, Spanish subjects, for which his technical mastery of wash lithography and colour was particularly well suited.
