André LHOTE

Trained as a wood sculptor, André Lhote began painting in 1905. This artist from Bordeaux moved to Paris in 1907. There he discovered the paintings of Gauguin and Cézanne, which were a real revelation for him. A follower of Cubism from its inception, he took part in the creation of Synthetic Cubism in 1917 alongside Braque, Metzinger, Severini and Maria Blanchard. Like other cubist painters, he was also a collector of African and Oceanic art.
