A great admirer of Richard Parkes Bonington, Isabey embodies, in his own time, the artistic transition between the English Romantics and the Impressionists, foreshadowing painters such as Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind, whom he would greatly inspire.

A prolific artist, Isabey is particularly known for his seascapes inspired by views of Normandy.
