Henri GUÉRARD
1846 - 1897
Besides the many reproductive prints he made after the masters or after works of art (notably for La Gazette des Beaux-Arts), Henri Guérard was the author of nearly five hundred original pieces. Working in every technique (etching on copper or on the more malleable zinc, drypoint, mezzotint, xylography, monotype), he distinguished himself in all genres: portraits and expressive heads, still lifes, animals, landscapes (the latter the most numerous, whether urban or marine). Close to Manet (whose pupil, Eva Gonzalès, he married), receptive to the influence of the Impressionists and an admirer of Japanese art (as his then-famous fans best attest), Guérard took a full part in pictorial modernity. Although his original prints were intended chiefly for himself and his close circle, he was nonetheless one of the most important members of the Société des peintres-graveurs.
