François Baron GÉRARD

François Gérard joined Jacques-Louis David’s studio in 1786. He withdrew from painting during the revolutionary period and became a member of the Revolutionary Court in 1793. In 1795, he resumed his activities as a painter. He enjoyed great success and received numerous commissions, culminating in 1800 with the privilege of becoming one of Napoleon’s official painters. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honour and became a member of the Institut in 1812.
