Bertrand DORNY

Paris 1931 – 2015

Trained as a painter and a student of Othon Friesz, Bertrand Dorny was very quickly drawn to experimenting with other creative techniques and chose to devote himself primarily to printmaking, which he had discovered in 1955 and 1956 in Johnny Friedlaender’s studio and which he practiced continuously until 1991. At the same time, he was particularly interested in using humble materials, such as cardboard and various types of used and folded paper, with which he created numerous collages. In fact, before creating each engraved composition, the artist would first make a “model”: composed of various pieces of cardboard and paper that were cut, manipulated, and juxtaposed—often enhanced with ink or pencil—it served as a blueprint for the artist’s work.
