Entre 1930 et 1931, Lucien Simon est sollicité pour illustrer la réédition du roman Pêcheur d’Islande de Pierre Loti, paru en 1886. Il réalise pour ce travail un ensemble de cinquante aquarelles gouachées, d’après lesquelles Pierre Bouchet grave sur bois les illustrations destinées à être imprimées dans l’ouvrage final, tiré à 150 exemplaires et publié en 1934. Le roman conte l’histoire d’amour entre Yann, marin breton régulièrement envoyé en Islande et Marguerite, dite Gaud, jeune bretonne issue d’un milieu aisé. Notre feuille est l’un des cinquante dessins destinés à mettre en image Pêcheur d’Islande. Elle illustre le repas de noces de Gaud et Yann, relaté dans le chapitre 7 du livre.
Between 1930 and 1931, Lucien Simon was asked to illustrate the reprint of Pierre Loti’s novel Pêcheur d’Islande, published in 1886. He produced a set of fifty gouache watercolours, from which Pierre Bouchet woodcuts the illustrations to be printed in the final edition, of which 150 copies were printed and published in 1934. The novel tells the love story of Yann, a Breton sailor regularly sent to Iceland, and Marguerite, known as Gaud, a young Breton woman from a wealthy family. Our leaf is one of fifty drawings used to illustrate Pêcheur d’Islande. It illustrates Gaud and Yann’s wedding feast, described in chapter 7 of the book.
