En 1912, la famille Launois part s’installer à Tours où elle se lie d’amitié avec la famille Chavaillon. De retour d’un séjour en Algérie de 1920 à 1922, Jean Launois obtient le prix de l’Indochine en 1923 et s’embarque pour un court voyage à Hanoï. Ce portrait dessiné d’une jeune fille a probablement été exécuté d’après nature lorsque l’artiste était encore au Vietnam en 1924. Il retourne à Paris dans le courant de cette même année, où il exposera pour la première fois deux ans plus tard.
In 1912, the Launois family moved to Tours, where they became friends with the Chavaillon family. On his return from a stay in Algeria from 1920 to 1922, Jean Launois was awarded the Indochina Prize in 1923 and embarked on a short trip to Hanoi. This portrait of a young girl was probably drawn from life while the artist was still in Vietnam in 1924. He returned to Paris later that year, where he exhibited his work for the first time two years later.
