Cette gouache inédite est l’une des dernières œuvres conservées de l’artiste. Il n’a pas été possible d’identifier le monument – ou les éléments qui le composent. Sauf erreur, tout porte à croire que le dessinateur livre ici un caprice architectural dont il est familier. Bien qu’il semble de fantaisie, le paysage n’en est pas moins vecteur d’un certain sentiment élégiaque, accentué par la disproportion entre le tombeau du grand homme et les éclopés qui le regardent, sentiment alors à la mode dans les tableaux de ruines, mais que les événements révolutionnaires passés et le grand âge de l’artiste expliquent aussi certainement.

This unpublished gouache is one of the artist’s last surviving works. It has not been possible to identify the monument – or the elements that compose it. If not mistaken, everything leads to the conclusion that the artist here is delivering an architectural caprice he is familiar with. The landscape, though seemingly fanciful, nevertheless conveys a certain elegiac feeling, accentuated by the disproportion between the tomb of the great man and the cripples who look at it, a feeling then fashionable in paintings of ruins, but which past revolutionary events and the great age of the artist also certainly explain.
