Le Jugement de Pâris a particulièrement intéressé Ménard, puisqu’il exécute neuf versions du même thème entre 1906 et 1924. La première est conservée au Petit Palais (inv. PPD919), une autre fut exposée lors du Salon de 1907 et se trouve aujourd’hui au musée du Louvre (inv. RF 39730, recto).
Le paysage représenté est repris dans plusieurs dessins – en atteste une autre oeuvre au Louvre (inv. RF 39729, 13, recto – et semble correspondre à celui de Bormes-les-Mimosas, reconnaissable aux îles du Levant et de Port-Cros à l’arrière-plan. Dans un article de L’Art et la Vie paru en 1894, Victor Soulier voit dans les œuvres de Ménard « des visions d’une nature pacifiée, baignée d’aube et de crépuscule, où l’âme semble se retremper dans la candeur des aurores, et aspirer l’onction biblique qui découle des aurores. »
The Judgement of Paris was of particular interest to Ménard, as demonstrated by the nine versions he painted of the same theme between 1906 and 1924. The first version is located in the Petit Palais, Paris (inv. PPD919), while another one was exhibited at the Salon of 1907 and is now in the collections of the Louvre museum (inv. RF 39730, recto).
The landscape depicted here can be found is several other drawings by the artist – as shown in another drawing preserved in the Louvre (inv. RF 39729, 13, recto) – and seems to correspond to the location of Bormes-les-Mimosas in southern France, identifiable from the Levant and Port-Cros Islands in the background. In an article published in L’Art et la Vie in 1894, Victor Soulier sees, in Ménard’s work, « visions of a pacified nature, bathed by dawn and twilight, where the soul seems to plunge anew into the ingenuity of sunrise, taking in the biblical unction flowing out of sunrise. »
